There’s so much sameness amidst the multitude of compact crossovers that it’s refreshing to find something—anything—substantially different among them. But the Tiguan succeeds in setting itself apart in a very useful way: an available third row. Between the Tiguan’s seven-passenger capability and flexible interior (the second-row seats slide fore and aft, and they fold in three sections rather than the typical two), VW’s smallest SUV makes good use of its larger exterior footprint than the segment norm by delivering outsized practicality. The current-generation Tiguan launched for the 2018 model year, and it’s received only superficial changes since. For 2020, the Tiguan adds a Wi-Fi hotspot, which is now standard, as is additional safety content including forward-collision alert with automatic braking and a blind-spot warning system. There’s a new SE R-Line Black trim that packages 20-inch dark wheels, sunroof, fog lights, and parking-alert sensors. Volkswagen is also shortening its warranty on all of its 2020 models from a standout 6 years/72,000 miles down to a more typical 4 years/50,000 miles. But two years of complimentary maintenance is now included. Choosing a Tiguan trim is only about features and convenience equipment, as there are no powertrain options; they’re all powered by the same 184-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. We suggest stepping up to at least the SE model, which adds a larger 8.0-inch infotainment system, keyless access, and leatherette seats that are heated and powered. The jump from SE to SEL is a significant one, adding about $5000, but all the extra features it adds, including adaptive cruise, a panoramic sunroof, remote start, power liftgate, and larger 18-inch wheels, may be worth it to you. Adding all-wheel drive, which is available on any trim, adds roughly $1500, but makes the third row optional. If you’re in the business of hauling kids, we’d spend the extra money to make the Tiguan a seven-seater. Under the hood of every 2020 Tiguan is a turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 184 horsepower; front-wheel drive is standard but Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is optional. The reticence of the eight-speed automatic to downshift combined with noticeable turbo lag means that the Tiguan feels anything but eager off the line and a bit slothful around town. We’ve tested both front- and all-wheel-drive versions and neither of them proved to be all that hasty in our acceleration tests; the front-wheel-drive SEL Premium managed an 8.2-second run from zero to 60 mph while the all-wheel-drive SEL Premium required 9.1 seconds. The Tiguan’s ride is comfortable and compliant, which should please most drivers, but the tradeoff is less precision during brisk driving. A front-wheel-drive Tiguan we drove was easily unsettled by bumps in the road, but all-wheel-drive models were noticeably better at managing Michigan’s cratered highways and byways. The Tiguan’s brake-pedal action is soft and it doesn’t match up to the firm, progressive pedals we enjoy in other members of VW’s family tree. Volkswagen’s infotainment system—Car-Net—is sleek and features touch buttons integrated into a large glass screen. The system comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so drivers who prefer their smartphone’s familiar interface to Volkswagen’s system are in luck; a Wi-Fi hotspot is standard. A 480-watt nine-speaker Fender audio system is available for audiophiles but only in the top SEL Premium trim.
